Madison Wisconsin is the second largest city in the state of Wisconsin. It had an estimated population of 223,389 in the year 2006. Milwaukee Wisconsin is the first largest city in Wisconsin. Madison is the State Capital and is in Dane County. Madison is located in the center of Dane County in south-central Wisconsin, 77 miles west of Milwaukee and 122 miles northwest of Chicago.
Former federal judge, James Doty, purchased over one thousand acres of land on the Isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona and founded Madison, Wisconsin in 1836. The city took its name from the much admired President James Madison who had just died. The city was chosen as the state capital before it was even built. This was mainly because of its central location between Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien and because Doty lobbied and bribed heavily to make it so. The City of Madison has 39 streets named after the 39 signers of the Constitution.
Wisconsin state government and the University of Wisconsin–Madison are the top two Madison employers.
